Packing list ยท Bring, skip, save the day

What to actually pack for Universal Orlando.

The Universal packing list looks short on paper and long once you have forgotten the third thing at the hotel. Here is the realistic version.

Central Park area at Universal Studios Florida

TL;DR

Closed-toe shoes, refillable water bottle, portable charger, sunscreen, light layers, small bag with one zipper, hotel-room poncho. Skip costumes, big backpacks, anything you cannot fit in a coin locker, and most useful-at-a-theme-park Amazon impulse purchases.

The Universal packing list separates into three categories: park-day essentials, hotel-room essentials, and stuff to leave at home.

Most packing-list content piles every "useful" item into one list. The reality is most of those items live in the hotel room.

Park-Day Carry (Daily)

  • Closed-toe shoes you can walk in for 8+ hours. Non-negotiable. Sandals fail by lunch.
  • Refillable water bottle. Universal has bottle-filling stations.
  • Portable phone charger. The Universal app is your day-of tool; a dead phone wrecks the day.
  • Sunscreen. Apply at hotel before leaving; reapply at lunch.
  • Cash and a credit card. Mobile payment works most places but cash is helpful for one cocktail purchase or tip.
  • Light layers. Indoor air conditioning is aggressive; outdoor sun is aggressive. Pack a thin hoodie or jacket.
  • Small bag with one zipper. Most coasters require empty pockets and bag locker storage. Smaller bag = faster locker process.
  • Hotel-pack poncho. Better than the bulky park ones.

Hotel-Room Essentials (Stays In Room)

  • Sunscreen refills.
  • After-sun lotion.
  • Tylenol or ibuprofen.
  • Bandaids and blister patches (specifically Compeed for hot spots).
  • Snacks for late-night room dining.
  • Water bottles for hotel hydration between park days.
  • Extra socks and an extra change of clothes per traveler.
  • Phone charger cables.
  • Reusable shopping bag for souvenir packing on departure day.
  • Toiletries you actually use (hotel-provided varies in quality).

Clothing Strategy

  • Light-colored breathable shirts in summer. Dark shirts cook in the sun.
  • Two pairs of comfortable closed-toe shoes if your trip is 3+ days; rotating preserves both pairs.
  • Light pants or long shorts; very short shorts can chafe with extended walking.
  • A hat with a brim (not just a baseball cap). Backs of necks burn worst.
  • UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • One nice outfit for the table-service dinner (if planned).
  • Pajamas you can actually sleep in.

For Kids

  • Stroller fan or stroller cover for summer.
  • Snacks the kids actually eat. Twice what you think.
  • One full change of clothes per kid (water rides, spills, accidents).
  • Pacifiers, comfort items, the things that make naps possible.
  • Sunscreen specifically formulated for kids (less likely to sting).
  • Small first aid kit with bandaids.
  • Quiet activity for stroller / line waits.

For Adults-Only Trips

  • Smaller daytime bag.
  • Going-out outfit for evening CityWalk.
  • Sunglasses you do not mind losing on a coaster.
  • Phone charger that fits in a daytime bag.
  • Cash for cocktail tips.

For Long Trips (5+ Days)

  • Laundry detergent sheets if your hotel does not have laundry (or you do not want to pay hotel laundry).
  • An extra pair of shoes in case one gets wet on water rides.
  • A book or downloaded shows for slow afternoons.
  • Insulin / medication overlap if you take regular meds.

What To Leave At Home

  • Costumes and costume masks for HHN. Event dress rules vary, so check Universal's current policy before packing anything costume-like.
  • Big backpacks. Large bags slow down security and may not fit smaller attraction lockers.
  • Selfie sticks. Banned at most attractions.
  • Drones. Banned.
  • Outside food and drinks beyond Universal's listed exceptions: bottled water up to 2 liters per guest, medical or special-dietary food, baby food/formula, and small soft-sided coolers within Universal's size rules.
  • Anything fragile you'd be sad about losing on a water ride.
  • The "just in case" Amazon impulse purchases you bought specifically for this trip.

The Underrated Items

  • Cooling towel. Cheap, packs flat, transformative in summer.
  • Compeed blister patches. Way better than regular bandaids when your shoes start hurting.
  • Phone lanyard or carabiner. Prevents the panic moment when you drop your phone on a ride.
  • Refillable bottle that fits a stroller cup holder. The hands-free hydration matters.
  • Pre-portioned snack bags. Easier than rationing on the fly.
  • Small umbrella that fits a daypack. Saves a soggy hour during a passing storm.

Medical / Accessibility

  • All daily medications plus 3-day extra supply.
  • Medical documents if your group has specific needs.
  • Epinephrine auto-injectors, inhalers, glucose meters, and backups for required medical supplies.
  • A copy of insurance cards.
  • Universal accessibility services information printed or saved offline if you'll need them.

Day-Before Checklist

  1. Confirm tickets in the Universal app.
  2. Charge portable battery to 100%.
  3. Pack daypack with park-day carry items.
  4. Set out clothes for the morning.
  5. Check weather forecast; adjust layers and poncho.
  6. Verify hotel checkout / next-day plan.
  7. Hydrate.
  8. Set wake-up alarm with 30 minutes of buffer for morning prep.

If You Only Remember Three Things

  1. Closed-toe shoes you can walk in for 8 hours.
  2. Refillable water bottle and portable charger.
  3. Smaller bag means faster coaster lockers.

Keep planning
